Kataklysm

Born in the early 1990s out of Montreal’s metal scene (Québec, Canada), Kataklysm developed an extreme form of death metal originally defined by very fast tempos and a sound described as “northern hyperblast.” Formed in 1991 around guitarist Jean‑François Dagenais and after several lineup changes that saw bassist Maurizio Iacono take over vocals in the late 1990s, the band settled as a quartet and carved out a place in the North American and European death metal scenes. The early albums, from Sorcery (1995) to The Prophecy (Stigmata of the Immaculate) (2000), favored a chaotic, densely packed approach; with Shadows & Dust (2002), Serenity in Fire (2004) and In the Arms of Devastation (2006) their songwriting moved toward a more melodic, structured death metal. That trajectory continued on Prevail (2008), Heaven’s Venom (2010) and Waiting for the End to Come (2013), where Kataklysm added more groove and singable choruses while retaining guttural vocals and rapid riffs. The band further refined the balance between brutality and melody on Of Ghosts and Gods (2015), Meditations (2018) and Unconquered (2020), before releasing Goliath in 2023 — continuing a path toward more accessible yet still aggressive death metal. Active on international festival stages and regular tours, Kataklysm remains identified as a Canadian death metal band in constant evolution, articulating speed, syncopated rhythms and dark atmospheres.
