Hypocrisy

Formed in the early 1990s in Ludvika, Sweden, Hypocrisy was built around guitarist, vocalist and producer Peter Tägtgren, soon joined by bassist Mikael Hedlund and drummer Lars Szöke. The band's early releases, influenced by the Florida death metal scene, such as Penetralia (1992) and Osculum Obscenum (1993), are raw and fast. With The Fourth Dimension (1994) and especially Abducted (1996), they shifted toward a more melodic and atmospheric approach, introducing recurring themes of ufology, abductions and government conspiracies that became hallmarks of their work. Throughout the 2000s Hypocrisy refined a death metal style characterized by heavy rhythms, hooky riffs and growled vocals—evident on albums like Virus (2005) and End of Disclosure (2013)—while occasionally incorporating faster passages or black metal-tinged elements. Remaining true to a power-trio format on stage, and with drummer Horgh joining in 2004, the band alternated between studio activity and international touring, playing clubs and major European festivals and consolidating a distinctive sonic identity within the extreme metal scene.
