Kaleo

Formed in 2012 near Reykjavik, Kaleo is an Icelandic band whose identity lies between blues rock, folk and alternative rock. Fronted by singer‑guitarist Jökull “JJ Julius Son” Júlíusson and including members such as Davíð Antonsson, Daníel Kristjánsson and Rubin Pollock, Kaleo first made a name on the local scene before releasing a self‑titled debut album in 2013, distributed in Iceland. The band then settled in the United States, where they developed a sound strongly influenced by American music—combining electric riffs, acoustic ballads and soul inflections, with a constant play on dynamic contrast and JJ Julius Son’s prominent voice. The release of “A/B” in 2016 expanded Kaleo’s international reach, featuring tracks that alternate between tense blues rock and more stripped‑down compositions. In 2021, “Surface Sounds” affirmed this aesthetic by incorporating more pop and atmospheric elements while retaining the group’s rock and roots foundation. Kaleo’s songs move between English and Icelandic, and since the mid‑2010s the band has performed across European and North American stages, from club tours to major festivals.
