alt-J
Formed in Leeds in 2007 by Joe Newman, Gus Unger‑Hamilton, Gwil Sainsbury and Thom Sonny Green, alt‑J took a place on the British indie scene with music that crosses indie rock, folk, art rock and electronic influences. The name alt‑J refers to the keyboard shortcut that produces the delta symbol, hence the regular use of ∆ around the project. alt‑J emerged in the early 2010s with An Awesome Wave (2012), then followed with This Is All Yours (2014), released after Gwil Sainsbury’s departure, which made alt‑J a trio. Relaxer (2017) continued this trajectory with tracks of oblique forms, tight vocal harmonies and fragmented songwriting, before Reduxer (2018), a collaborative reinterpretation of that album, and The Dream (2022). alt‑J’s music rests on Joe Newman’s voice, often dry guitars, flexible rhythms and arrangements that alternate between sparseness and more abstract textures. Active on festival and venue circuits in Europe and North America, alt‑J has gradually shifted from its original university‑band frame toward concise experimental pop, where folk, hip‑hop and electronic references remain integrated into the song format.
