Portugal. The Man
Formed in the mid-2000s in Wasilla, Alaska, and later based in Portland before frequent relocations, Portugal. The Man operates within an indie-rock vein where psychedelia, pop, and soul accents intersect. Founded by singer-guitarist John Gourley and bassist Zach Carothers following their stint in Anatomy of a Ghost, Portugal. The Man first forged an identity rooted in experimental, lo-fi rock on Waiter: 'You Vultures!' (2006) and Church Mouth (2007), before expanding the melodic palette with Censored Colors (2008) and The Satanic Satanist (2009). The band quickly followed with American Ghetto (2010) and In the Mountain in the Cloud (2011), while building a heavy touring schedule across North American and European independent circuits. With Evil Friends (2013), produced by Danger Mouse, Portugal. The Man emphasized its pop and electronic side—a direction extended on Woodstock (2017), propelled by the single 'Feel It Still,' and on Chris Black Changed My Life (2023), where the group keeps a rock core while exploring more accessible formats and lyrics often rooted in social and political issues.
