Jenny Hval

Born in Oslo in 1980, Jenny Hval has developed since the mid-2000s a career situated between art pop, experimental music, ambient, folk and spoken-word writing. After beginnings under the name Rockettothesky — notably with To Sing You Apple Trees (2006) and Medea (2008) — she released Viscera in 2011 under her own name, the starting point of work in which song blends with electronic textures, spare arrangements and a constant attention to the voice as material. She refined this approach on Innocence Is Kinky (2013), Apocalypse, girl (2015), Blood Bitch (2016), The Practice of Love (2019) and Classic Objects (2022), bringing oblique pop, performance, literature and reflections on the body, intimacy and language into dialogue. Her universe navigates between open melodic structures, spoken word, atmospheric moods and more abstract ruptures, while remaining tied to the song format. Present in indie circuits as well as on stages linked to contemporary art and experimental music, Jenny Hval also leads the duo Lost Girls with Håvard Volden, a freer, more improvisatory extension of her practice.
