Gilla Band
Formed in Dublin in 2011, Gilla Band brings together Dara Kiely, Alan Duggan, Daniel Fox and Adam Faulkner in an Irish quartet that initially became known as Girl Band before adopting the name Gilla Band in 2021. Their trajectory sits between post-punk, noise rock and indie rock, marked by tense, repetitive and abrasive songwriting, where pounding rhythms, dissonant guitars and Kiely’s often spoken or convulsive vocals are central. After the single “In My Head” in 2012 and the France 98 EP the same year, Gilla Band quickly built a notable live presence in Ireland and then the UK, on independent rock circuits known for intense performances. The band later signed with Rough Trade and released their debut album Holding Hands with Jamie in 2015, which established the foundations of their sonic language. Following a slowdown caused by health issues, Gilla Band returned with The Talkies in 2019, a more angular record threaded with industrial and electronic influences, and continued that evolution with Most Normal in 2022. For Gilla Band, rhythmic tension, loops, noise textures and a form of melodic sparseness combine into music that is physical, nervous and often direct.
