Squid
Formed in Brighton in 2016 before relocating to Bristol, Squid brings together five musicians whose writing blends post-punk, experimental rock, krautrock, new wave, post-rock and more atmospheric passages. Ollie Judge’s central role — on drums as well as vocals — gives Squid a distinctive rhythmic tension, between spoken delivery, abrupt melodic lines and collective build-ups. After the debut EP LINO. in 2017, the quintet attracted wider attention with Town Centre in 2019, released on Speedy Wunderground and produced by Dan Carey, where their angular tracks, repetitive loops and taste for shifting constructions were already evident. Squid then signed to Warp and developed this language on Bright Green Field (2021) and O Monolith (2023), two albums on which the band broadened its palette with more textures, ruptures and arrangements. Squid’s discography also includes the EPs Natural Resources (2020) and Near the Westway (2021), and the album Cowards, announced for 2025. On stage and in the studio, Squid channels energy between a mobile bass, nervous guitars, keyboards and percussion in a collective format that remains fluid without losing its line.
