Wintersleep
Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Wintersleep has operated since the early 2000s in a space where Canadian indie rock intersects with alternative rock, post‑rock swells and often darker-tinged pop songwriting. The quintet currently comprises Paul Murphy, Tim D’Eon, Jon Samuel, Chris Bell and Loel Campbell. Wintersleep first released Wintersleep in 2003 and Untitled in 2005, before Welcome to the Night Sky arrived in 2007, a record that accompanied the band's increased visibility on the North American indie circuit. Their music rests on guitars that are at once melodic and taut, background keyboards, a flexible rhythmic foundation and songs built on dynamic contrasts rather than on showmanship. Over the years Wintersleep has evolved this base without changing course: New Inheritors (2011) broadened the format, Hello Hum (2012) pushed further into electronic textures and arrangements, while The Great Detachment (2016) and In the Land Of (2019) maintained a balance between rock tension, contemplative atmospheres and introspective vocals. Active on stage in Canada, the United States and Europe, Wintersleep follows a durable trajectory marked by a coherent sonic identity and steady progression from one record to the next.
