Arkells
Formed in the mid-2000s in Hamilton, Ontario, the Canadian band Arkells belongs to an indie-rock vein that blends alternative rock, pop rock and soul accents. Emerging from McMaster University’s campus scene and initially active under the name Charlemagne, the musicians soon adopted the name Arkells—taken from a street in their neighborhood—and built a quintet around Max Kerman’s voice. After a first EP, the band drew attention with the 2008 album «Jackson Square», characterized by direct guitars, sing‑along choruses and lyrics rooted in urban everyday life. Arkells then refined a more melodic, keyboard-friendly register on «Michigan Left» (2011) and «High Noon» (2014), while consolidating their presence on Canadian and North American stages, from clubs and festivals to mid‑sized venues. With «Morning Report» (2016) and «Rally Cry» (2018) they emphasized pop elements and brass arrangements, incorporating more soul and R&B influences. The acoustic record «Campfire Chords» (2020) offers stripped-down reworkings of several tracks, before a phase of more fragmented productions with «Blink Once» (2021) and «Blink Twice» (2022), which multiplied collaborations—among them Tegan and Sara, Lights, Cold War Kids and Cœur de pirate. In 2023, «Laundry Pile» returns to a more intimate, song-centered writing approach, confirming Arkells’ grounding in a narrative, accessible rock strongly driven by the collective.
