The Zolas

Emerging from Vancouver's independent scene in British Columbia, The Zolas took shape in the late 2000s around the duo of Zach Gray and Tom Dobrzanski, following an earlier run as Lotus Child. The band cultivated a melodic indie rock that blends nervous guitars, prominent keyboards and pop-oriented songwriting often tinged with new wave and alternative rock. They first drew attention with Tic Toc Tic in 2009 and refined their identity on Ancient Mars in 2012, where the sound gained breadth and density. With Swooner in 2016, The Zolas leaned further into the synth-pop side of their music without abandoning the rock tension of their beginnings, a progression they continued on Come Back to Life in 2021. Through lineup changes the project has remained anchored by this creative core, balancing direct choruses, subtle electronic textures and a keen observation of everyday life. Performing on club and festival stages in Canada and abroad, The Zolas sit within a tradition of accessible yet carefully crafted indie at the intersection of band rock and a brighter, modern pop.
