Matthew Good
Born in Burnaby, British Columbia, in 1971, Matthew Good entered the Canadian rock scene in the early 1990s, initially as the singer and principal songwriter of the Vancouver-based Matthew Good Band. With this alternative rock and post-grunge group he was part of the North American rock wave of the late 1990s, releasing albums such as 'Last of the Ghetto Astronauts' (1995), 'Underdogs' (1997), 'Beautiful Midnight' (1999) and 'The Audio of Being' (2001). After the band's split, Matthew Good pursued a solo career in which his songwriting remained central, addressing both social critique and more intimate themes. Records like 'Avalanche' (2003), 'White Light Rock & Roll Review' (2004), 'Hospital Music' (2007), 'Vancouver' (2009), 'Lights of Endangered Species' (2011), 'Arrows of Desire' (2013), 'Chaotic Neutral' (2015), 'Something Like a Storm' (2017) and 'Moving Walls' (2020) keep him within a rock and indie register, marked by melodic guitars, sometimes atmospheric textures and vocals in the foreground. A strong presence on Canadian and North American stages, Matthew Good has over the years developed an aesthetic in which alternative rock provides a frame for narrative, often political songwriting that is attentive to social tensions and mental health issues.
