Said The Whale

Anchored in Vancouver, British Columbia, Said The Whale took shape in 2007 around songwriters Ben Worcester and Tyler Bancroft, soon joined by keyboardist Jaycelyn Brown, forming an indie rock outfit with pop overtones. From Taking Abalonia (2007)—reworked the following year as Howe Sounds/Taking Abalonia (2008)—the band established a melodic world driven by bright guitars, finely structured vocal harmonies, and lyrics rooted on Canada’s Pacific coast, balancing everyday vignettes with urban landscapes. With Islands Disappear (2009) and then Little Mountain (2012), Said The Whale solidified a writing style that alternates between high-energy tracks and more contemplative pieces, while ramping up tours across Canada and the United States and embedding itself in the network of independent venues and festivals. The album hawaiii (2013) marked a more pop-oriented turn, as the group refined its arrangements and leaned further into the contrasts between Worcester’s and Bancroft’s voices. After several changes in the rhythm section, Said The Whale continued with As Long As Your Eyes Are Wide (2017), with more introspective moods, followed by Cascadia (2019) and Dandelion (2021), extending an approach that blends indie rock, alternative pop, and folk touches. The band’s discography thus reflects a steady evolution in its songwriting while preserving a core of direct, melody-driven songs built on ensemble dynamics.
