Agnes Obel
Born in Copenhagen in 1980 and later based in Berlin, Agnes Obel has gradually established herself as a composer, pianist and singer at the intersection of chamber pop, intimate folk and a style close to classical music. Raised in a family where the piano and a record collection were central, she began writing her own pieces before, from the 2000s, focusing on work centered around the voice, piano and a small string ensemble. Her debut album, “Philharmonics” (2010), introduced a stripped-down world where slow melodies, vocal harmonies and hushed atmospheres take precedence; “Aventine” (2013) extended this aesthetic with a stronger emphasis on cello and violin textures. With “Citizen of Glass” (2016), Obel explored more conceptual structures around identity and transparency while retaining minimalist, repetitive arrangements, and she further refined this introspective approach on “Myopia” (2020), an album driven by circular piano motifs and closely layered vocal work. In concert, she adapts these compositions for chamber ensembles, favoring a sober acoustic dynamic that enhances the contemplative and slightly cinematic quality of her writing.
