Alela Diane
Straddling intimate folk and acoustic songwriting, Alela Diane has, since the early 2000s, developed a body of work focused on voice and guitar, nourished by her childhood in Nevada City, California, in a family of musicians. After a few self-released recordings, she issued The Pirate’s Gospel in 2004 (reissued in 2006), which drew attention on American and European indie scenes, and continued that spare folk vein with To Be Still in 2009. Later based in Portland, she explored a more electric, collective format with Alela Diane & Wild Divine in 2011, featuring, among others, her father on guitar and her then partner, before returning to a more stripped-down, introspective songwriting approach on About Farewell in 2013. In 2015 the album Cold Moon, a duo with guitarist and composer Ryan Francesconi, opened a more instrumental chapter with contemporary folk hues. The albums Cusp (2018) and Looking Glass (2022) deepen a palette that blends folk ballads, subtle country influences and piano and string arrangements, while retaining a strong grounding in the American songwriting tradition. A regular presence on intimate venue circuits and at festivals, Alela Diane alternates solo tours and small ensembles, favouring a direct connection with the audience and the listening space.
