AFI
Formed in the early 1990s in Ukiah, California, AFI (A Fire Inside) initially aligned with hardcore punk and skate punk, propelled by Davey Havok’s vocals and Adam Carson’s drumming, soon joined by bassist Hunter Burgan and later guitarist Jade Puget. Rooted in the Bay Area punk scene and the independent touring circuit, AFI sharpened its identity with the albums Answer That and Stay Fashionable (1995), Very Proud of Ya (1996), and Shut Your Mouth and Open Your Eyes (1997), marked by fast tempos and a chant-like vocal delivery. Beginning with Black Sails in the Sunset (1999) and The Art of Drowning (2000), the band introduced darker shades, more elaborate gang vocals, and a gothic undertone that paved the way toward alternative rock and post-hardcore. With Sing the Sorrow (2003) and Decemberunderground (2006), AFI developed a more atmospheric sound, playing on contrasts between melodic passages and punk energy, before exploring a more modern, melody-forward rock vein on Crash Love (2009) and Burials (2013). AFI (The Blood Album) (2017) and Bodies (2021) extend this evolution by integrating new wave influences and a more synth-leaning sensibility, while retaining a core of guitar, bass, and drums. AFI remains associated with a dark visual aesthetic and live shows that foreground the communal gang vocals and the intensity of Havok’s delivery.
