Malibu

Building a universe between hazy ambient, slowed-down pop and echoes of film music, Malibu has developed since the latter half of the 2010s an electronic practice focused on vocal textures and aquatic atmospheres. A French artist active on the European scene, Malibu first drew attention with online mixtapes and DJ sets where stretched mainstream ballads, synth layers and fragments of field recordings intersected, before releasing the EP One Life (2019), which captured in the studio this work on slowness, echo and memory. With Palaces of Pity (2022), the musician pushes this contemplative aesthetic further, playing on near-cinematic crescendos and minimalist melodic motifs, often on the border between slowed trance and dream pop. In concert, Malibu adapts these pieces into hybrid formats—between live ambient and a more club-oriented selection depending on the context—and performs in both clubs and festivals oriented toward experimental music. Alongside parallel aliases and occasional collaborations with other producers, Malibu maintains a small but coherent discography, marked by constant attention to filtered voices, deep reverbs and an intimate narrative, often associated with themes of the sea, memories and disappearance.
