Joji
Born in Osaka in 1992, Japanese-Australian George Kusunoki Miller develops a project under the name Joji focused on alternative R&B infused with pop, lo‑fi and hip‑hop. Initially active on YouTube in the early 2010s with comedic performances, he ended that activity around 2017 to devote himself entirely to music and songwriting. Joji joined the collective 88rising and released the EP In Tongues in 2017, which established a sound characterized by slow tempos, spare electronic production and often whispered vocals. His debut album Ballads 1 (2018) and Nectar (2020) deepened this melancholic aesthetic and blurred the lines between R&B balladry, ambient and trap influences. With Smithereens (2022) Joji favored more concise formats while retaining an introspective approach. Regularly performing across several continents, he draws an audience from both internet cultures and contemporary pop and R&B scenes.
