Maruja
On Manchester's independent scene, the British band Maruja develops music at the crossroads of post-punk, noise rock and dark, tense jazz. Formed in the early 2020s, Maruja first established itself in small local clubs before gradually expanding its concert activity across the rest of the United Kingdom and Europe, with a tight lineup centered on guitar, rhythm section and saxophone. Maruja's songs often revolve around long builds of tension, blending repetitive riffs, heavy bass lines, saxophone parts that verge on improvisation and spoken or chanted vocals, in a register that addresses social pressure, urban anxiety and political conflicts. The band released its first tracks digitally before issuing the EP “Knocknarea” in 2023, which consolidated Maruja's experimental aesthetic between stretched rock structures, abrasive textures and more atmospheric passages. Alongside this still-brief discography, Maruja places emphasis on high-volume concerts and a collective stage presence, seeking to translate the very physical dynamic of its studio compositions into the live setting.
