Geordie Greep

Born in Walthamstow, east London, Geordie Greep developed an early taste for hybrid musical forms, nourished as much by progressive rock as by jazz, classical music and improvisation. Educated at the BRIT School, he met the future members of Black Midi there and emerged with the band from the Windmill scene in Brixton from 2017 onwards. As the group's singer, guitarist and principal songwriter, he helped shape a tense, shifting sound that sits between art rock, post‑punk, math rock, jazz fusion and avant‑prog, marked by abrupt rhythms, unstable structures and a writing style inclined toward narrative. This trajectory is crystallised on three Black Midi albums: Schlagenheim (2019), Cavalcade (2021) and Hellfire (2022). After the band went on hiatus in 2024, Greep embarked on a solo path while retaining his dense, theatrical approach to singing and composition. His first album under his own name, The New Sound, was released in 2024 on Rough Trade. There he extends a universe where experimental rock, Latin inflections, jazz and character‑driven songs coexist, with a stronger emphasis on narration and contrasts in performance.
