This Is The Kit
Around the English singer, guitarist and banjo player Kate Stables, born in Winchester, This Is The Kit took shape in the early 2000s as a project with a flexible lineup — initially closely tied to a solo format before settling into a band dynamic with, at various times, Rozi Plain, Neil Smith and Jamie Whitby-Coles. This Is The Kit's music blends folk rock and alternative rock in a relaxed songwriting style, where acoustic strings, banjo, rougher guitars and slightly off-kilter rhythms accompany a voice with direct phrasing. After the single “Two Wooden Spoons” in 2006, This Is The Kit released Krülle Bol in 2008, produced in Bristol by John Parish, and Wriggle Out the Restless in 2010. The project gradually established itself on British and European stages, with regular appearances on BBC Radio 6 Music, before Bashed Out in 2015, recorded with Aaron Dessner. This Is The Kit followed with Moonshine Freeze in 2017, Off Off On in 2020 and Careful of Your Keepers in 2023, all released on Rough Trade. Between contemporary folk, indie rock and stripped-back songwriting, This Is The Kit has also toured with acts such as The National, Sharon Van Etten, Iron & Wine and Herman Dune.
