Joan Shelley

Joan Shelley is an American songwriter, composer and singer from Kentucky, associated with the contemporary folk and Americana scenes. Her music is built on spare songwriting, organic arrangements and a clear voice, often accompanied by acoustic guitar and subtle instrumentation that foreground the lyrics and melody. Since her debut album in 2010 she has assembled a notable discography, including Electric Ursa (2014), Over and Even (2015), the highly praised Joan Shelley (2017) produced by Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy, Like the River Loves the Sea (2019) with Daniel Martin Moore, and The Spur (2022), realized by Ariel Pink and co-produced with James Elkington. A regular collaborator with musicians such as Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy and Nathan Salsburg, she belongs to a contemporary folk tradition—precise in her writing and rooted in the musical landscape of the American Midwest.
