Aldous Harding
Originally from Lyttelton on New Zealand’s South Island, Aldous Harding has, since the early 2010s, been building a body of work rooted in stripped-back folk songwriting that gradually shifts toward an intimate, slightly experimental form of pop. Under this stage name, the singer and songwriter first made a name for herself on the local scene before releasing a self-titled debut in 2014, marked by slow acoustic songs and a stark, unadorned vocal delivery. Harding then signed with 4AD and recorded Party in 2017 with producer John Parish, an album that opened up a broader palette, introducing keyboards, understated arrangements, and a pronounced play with vocal shifts. Designer (2019) and Warm Chris (2022) extend this evolution toward a chamber-pop approach, with sinuous melodic structures, while retaining a folk foundation. Harding’s work foregrounds elliptical lyrics, a theatrical way of modulating the voice, and a taste for minimalist atmospheres. On stage, she performs solo or with a band, alternating between guitar and piano, and tours in Europe, North America, Australia, and New Zealand, across circuits of independent venues and festivals oriented toward folk and alternative music.
