The Ocean
Formed in Berlin in 2001 around guitarist Robin Staps, The Ocean—often billed as The Ocean Collective—began as a fluid collective before settling into a core group of musicians. The project sits at the intersection of post‑metal, progressive metal and avant‑garde metal, emphasizing contrasts between heavy sonic masses, atmospheric passages, orchestral textures and, more recently, increasingly prominent electronic elements. After the instrumental debut Fogdiver (2003), The Ocean introduced more vocals on Fluxion (2004) and Aeolian (2005), then expanded their scope with the concept album Precambrian (2007), centered on geological eras. The next phase refined this narrative approach with Heliocentric and Anthropocentric, both released in 2010, followed by Pelagial (2013), built around the depths of the ocean. On stage, The Ocean moves within post‑metal, prog and experimental metal circles, touring with acts such as Cult of Luna, Neurosis, Opeth, Leprous and Katatonia. The diptych Phanerozoic I: Palaeozoic (2018) and Phanerozoic II: Mesozoic / Cenozoic (2020) extended the band’s interest in Earth’s history, while Holocene (2023) tightened the writing toward a more melodic, more electronic and at times less confrontational form of progressive metal.
