Testament

Formed in the early 1980s in the San Francisco Bay Area, thrash metal band Testament originated around guitarist Eric Peterson under the name Legacy, before officially taking the name Testament in 1986. Hailing from Berkeley, California, the group became part of the Bay Area thrash movement, developing a sound that blends fast riffs, occasionally technical song structures and melodic lead guitars, driven by Chuck Billy’s powerful, nuanced vocals—he assumed vocal duties in 1986. Their first studio album, The Legacy (1987), followed by The New Order (1988) and Practice What You Preach (1989), established Testament on the international metal scene, from California clubs to major festivals, with songwriting that ranges from straightforward thrash to heavier passages and progressive touches. The 1990s releases, from Souls of Black (1990) to Low (1994) and Demonic (1997), reflect lineup changes and a darker direction—occasionally incorporating elements close to death metal—culminating in The Gathering (1999), which synthesizes these phases. After a period of slowdown, Testament regained momentum in the 2000s with The Formation of Damnation (2008), followed by Dark Roots of Earth (2012), Brotherhood of the Snake (2016) and Titans of Creation (2020), confirming the band’s place in contemporary thrash while retaining its melodic trademarks and strong roots in the American scene.
