Exhorder

Formed in New Orleans in the mid-1980s, Exhorder sits on the drier, more taut edge of American thrash metal, with a playing style quickly oriented toward syncopated, massive and heavier riffs that also placed it in the history of groove metal. The band first released demos before issuing Slaughter in the Vatican in 1990, followed by The Law in 1992, two records that mark Exhorder’s evolution from a frontal thrash to a more compact and percussion-driven writing. Split in 1994, Exhorder experienced a first reunion between 2008 and 2011, then resumed activity more permanently from 2017 around vocalist Kyle Thomas, who remained the group's central figure through lineup changes. Since that reform, Exhorder has returned to North American and European stages, with appearances at metal festivals and tours shared notably with Overkill and Kataklysm. This new phase was accompanied by two studio albums, Mourn the Southern Skies in 2019 and Defectum Omnium in 2024. Today organized as a tight formation around Kyle Thomas, Jason VieBrooks and Pat O’Brien, Exhorder maintains an approach based on rhythmic tension, crisp riffing and thrash-derived aggression, without sacrificing a firmer heaviness.
