Soulfly
Formed in Phoenix, Arizona in 1997 around Max Cavalera following his departure from Sepultura, Soulfly developed a hybrid metal sound blending groove metal, thrash, death metal, nu metal and elements of alternative metal, regularly incorporating tribal percussion and influences from traditional music. Conceived from the outset as a flexible project centered on Cavalera, Soulfly underwent numerous lineup changes while maintaining an identity defined by heavy riffs, massive tempos and more atmospheric or acoustic passages. The debut album Soulfly was released in 1998, followed by Primitive in 2000 and Om in 2002, during a period when the band played stages such as Ozzfest and shared bills with acts from the alternative and extreme metal spheres. With Prophecy (2004) and Dark Ages (2005), Soulfly emphasized its thrash and death side while retaining its tribal dimension. Subsequent releases include Conquer (2008), Omen (2010), Enslaved (2012), Savages (2013), Archangel (2015), Ritual (2018) and Totem (2022). Over the years Soulfly has also crossed paths with musicians from Deftones, Slayer, Megadeth, Morbid Angel and Ill Niño, maintaining a trajectory tied to the international metal circuit.
