Simply Red

Formed in Manchester in 1985 around lead singer and songwriter Mick Hucknall, Simply Red sits within a British pop-soul scene nourished by blue-eyed soul, soft rock, and at times light funk or sophisti-pop. The group broke through with Picture Book in 1985, propelled by 'Money’s Too Tight (to Mention)' and then 'Holding Back the Years', and quickly developed a melodic writing centered on Hucknall's supple and instantly identifiable voice. Through lineup changes, Simply Red remains built around this core, with recurring musicians like Ian Kirkham, present from the early years, while the aesthetics evolve from a soul-pop still marked by the 1980s toward a smoother and more expansive sound on Men and Women (1987), A New Flame (1989), and Stars (1991). The 1990s saw Simply Red alternating original compositions and covers, with tracks like 'If You Don’t Know Me by Now' or 'Fairground', while occasionally incorporating more danceable textures on Life (1995), Blue (1998) and Home (2003). After a split in 2010, Simply Red reformed in 2015 and resumed live activity with a renewed lineup around Mick Hucknall. Since then the band has released Big Love (2015), Blue Eyed Soul (2019) and Time (2023), confirming the continuity of a repertoire situated between elegant soul, adult pop, and refined arrangements.
