Lisa Stansfield

Born in Manchester in 1966 and raised between Heywood and Rochdale, Lisa Stansfield developed in the early 1980s a repertoire straddling soul, contemporary R&B, pop and dance, marked by a deep voice and a strong taste for arrangements rooted in classic soul. After a few initial singles, she formed Blue Zone with Ian Devaney and Andy Morris, two key collaborators in her career. Her solo trajectory began to crystallize in 1989 with “People Hold On”, recorded with Coldcut, and the album Affection (1989), which includes “All Around the World”. She followed with Real Love (1991) and So Natural (1993), albums that mix soul ballads, funky grooves and polished pop production. The self-titled Lisa Stansfield (1997) continued that approach while adding a clearer club dimension, followed by Face Up (2001) and The Moment (2004). After a break from recording she returned with Seven (2014) and Deeper (2018). Over her career she has also recorded for film—most notably “Someday (I’m Coming Back)” for The Bodyguard—and collaborated with artists such as George Michael, Queen, Babyface and Barry White, while maintaining a steady presence on stages across Europe and North America.
