Simple Minds

Formed in Glasgow in 1977 in the wake of the Scottish post-punk scene, Simple Minds initially built around Jim Kerr and Charlie Burchill, who have always been at the heart of the group, before, over the decades, becoming a lineup with a variable geometry. The early albums, Life in a Day (1979) to Empires and Dance (1980), saw Simple Minds move from a nerve-wracked new wave toward a more experimental sound, marked by synthetic textures, repetitive rhythms and an art-rock approach nourished by the European scene. With Sons and Fascination (1981) and New Gold Dream (81/82/83/84) (1982), the band refined a broader writing, where synth-pop, atmospheric guitars and more direct melodies intersect. This trajectory continued with Sparkle in the Rain (1984), Once Upon a Time (1985) and Street Fighting Years (1989), a period during which Simple Minds moved from a sophisticated post-punk aesthetic to a grand-stage rock, without abandoning a certain sonic density. Among career milestones are also the single Don't You (Forget About Me) (1985), their Live Aid appearance the same year, followed by a sequence of albums that accompanied several lineup reshuffles, from Real Life (1991) to Good News from the Next World (1995), up to more recent returns with Graffiti Soul (2009), Big Music (2014), Walk Between Worlds (2018) and Direction of the Heart (2022). Today, Simple Minds remains led by the Kerr-Burchill duo, surrounded by touring musicians, with a repertoire that links the band's new wave roots to a form of expansive melodic and synthetic rock.
