Royksopp
Around Svein Berge and Torbjørn Brundtland, Röyksopp has been developing a melodic electronic sound from Tromsø in northern Norway since the late 1990s, situated between downtempo, ambient and synth-pop. Childhood friends immersed in the local scene, the two members craft a sound of restrained grooves, atmospheric textures and clear synth lines that can shift from contemplation to more club-oriented writing. Their first album, Melody A.M. (2001), introduced Röyksopp beyond Norway, followed by The Understanding (2005), in which the duo accentuated the pop and vocal dimension. Junior (2009) and Senior (2010) were conceived as two complementary installments — one driven by songs, the other almost entirely instrumental. With The Inevitable End (2014), Röyksopp announced an intention to close the traditional album format, before returning in 2022 with the three-part project Profound Mysteries, both conceptual and accompanied by visual creations. Over the years, Röyksopp have multiplied collaborations with Nordic vocalists and electronic producers, alternating live sets and DJ appearances on club and festival stages, and have pursued an aesthetic where pop, house and a certain Scandinavian melancholy intersect within a single electronic framework.
