Pig Destroyer

Born in Alexandria, Virginia, Pig Destroyer formed in 1997 around vocalist J. R. Hayes and guitarist Scott Hull, initially with drummer John Evans and soon after Brian Harvey. For many years without a permanent bassist, the band developed a compact grindcore—often aligned with deathgrind—that blends the speed of hardcore punk, the austerity of thrash and heavier, doom-tinged passages. After Explosions in Ward 6 (1998), they refined this approach on Prowler in the Yard (2001), Terrifyer (2004) and Phantom Limb (2007), appearing on both extreme metal and hardcore stages. Pig Destroyer’s identity is also shaped by J. R. Hayes’ writing—fragmentary narratives and stark imagery—and by the noise textures contributed by Blake Harrison from the mid-2000s, later taken over by Alex Cha in 2023. In 2011 Adam Jarvis replaced Brian Harvey on drums, and the band later added a permanent bass position, first held by John Jarvis and from 2019 by Travis Stone. Subsequent releases include Book Burner (2012), Head Cage (2018) and the EP The Octagonal Stairway (2020).
