Defeated Sanity

Born in Dachsbach, Bavaria, Defeated Sanity took shape in 1993 around guitarist Wolfgang Teske and drummer Lille Gruber, who has remained the group's core ever since. Defeated Sanity operates within a death metal that is at once brutal, technical and progressive, with very dense compositions, frequent tempo changes and a noticeable jazz‑fusion influence in the handling of structures. After several demos in the late 1990s, Defeated Sanity released Prelude to the Tragedy in 2004 and Psalms of the Moribund in 2007, before widening their audience in the extreme scene with Chapters of Repugnance (2010) and Passages into Deformity (2013). In 2016, Disposal of the Dead / Dharmata put two sides of their identity in parallel — one more direct, the other leaning toward an old‑school style of progressive death metal. The Sanguinary Impetus followed in 2020, and Chronicles of Lunacy in 2024. Having gone through several lineup changes, Defeated Sanity today rests on Lille Gruber, Jacob Schmidt, Josh Welshman and Vaughn Stoffey. The band has also appeared on stages such as Maryland Deathfest, Party.San Open Air and Obscene Extreme, with a trajectory spanning Europe and North America.
