Obscura

Formed in Landshut, Germany, around guitarist and vocalist Steffen Kummerer in 2002, Obscura initially operated under the name Illegimitation before adopting its current identity with the debut album. The German band performs technical death metal with a strong progressive component: dense compositions, highly articulated riffs, a prominent bass presence, and structures that draw from extreme metal as well as more elaborate songwriting. After their first record, Retribution (2006), Obscura gained visibility with Cosmogenesis (2009) and Omnivium (2011), followed by Akróasis (2016), Diluvium (2018), A Valediction (2021) and A Sonication (2025). The band's history is also marked by numerous lineup changes, with Steffen Kummerer remaining the project's core alongside musicians from the technical metal scene such as Christian Münzner, Hannes Grossmann, Jeroen Paul Thesseling, Linus Klausenitzer and Sebastian Lanser. On stage, Obscura has played clubs, festivals and international tours across Europe, North America, Japan and Australia, notably alongside bands like Cannibal Corpse, Nile, Death DTA, Sepultura, Cynic and Decapitated. Now structured as a quartet, Obscura maintains a precise, fast and melodic approach where virtuosity remains tied to a rigorous compositional framework.
