Less Than Jake
Formed in Gainesville, Florida, in 1992, Less Than Jake became part of the American ska‑punk wave by combining fast rhythms, a brass section and pop‑punk influences. The band centered on Chris DeMakes (guitar, vocals), Roger Lima (bass, vocals) and songwriter/drummer Vinnie Fiorello, later joined by brass players Buddy Schaub and JR Wasilewski, giving Less Than Jake a sound defined by trombone and saxophone arrangements. After beginnings on the local independent scene, they attracted attention with the album Pezcore in 1995, followed by Losing Streak in 1996 and Hello Rockview in 1998, which established their mix of melodic punk, energetic ska and lyrics concerned with everyday life, nostalgia and social relationships. Subsequent records, from Borders & Boundaries (2000) to Anthem (2003) and In with the Out Crowd (2006), were accompanied by regular tours in the United States and Europe, notably at punk festivals and on the touring circuit. With GNV FLA in 2008, then See the Light in 2013 and Silver Linings in 2020, Less Than Jake maintained a steady output of recordings, EPs and concerts despite changes at the drum stool, and remained associated with the international ska‑punk and pop‑punk scenes of the 1990s and 2000s.
