Gang of Youths

Formed in Sydney in 2012 around singer and principal songwriter David Le'aupepe, Gang of Youths develops a spacious alternative rock and indie rock sound, where guitars, piano and, later, strings play a significant role. The band first established itself on the Australian scene with a repertoire carried by a highly narrative writing style and dense arrangements, before expanding its activity to the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States after moving to London in the mid-2010s. Their first album, The Positions (2015), lays the foundations for a sound that blends rock tension, melodic lyricism, and stretched song formats. It was followed by the EP Let Me Be Clear (2016) and Go Farther in Lightness (2017), a record marking a rise in live scope and increased presence at major festivals and international tours. Gang of Youths notably shared the bill with Foo Fighters and Mumford & Sons while pursuing a trajectory that moves away from the simple guitar-bass-drums format. After the departure of guitarist Joji Malani in 2019, the arrival of Tom Hobden in 2020 strengthened this dimension with violin and keyboards. On Angel in Realtime (2022), Gang of Youths pushes further an orchestral rock aesthetic, threaded by folk, chamber music and writing centered on Le'aupepe's family history. The band today comprises David Le'aupepe, Jung Kim, Donnie Borzestowski and Tom Hobden.
