Florence And The Machine
In London in the mid-2000s, Florence Welch began performing under the name Florence And The Machine, a project that brought the singer and songwriter together with a collective of musicians led in particular by keyboardist and arranger Isabella Summers. Rooted in the British indie rock scene, Florence And The Machine developed a blend of alternative rock, art pop, and baroque pop, marked by an expressive voice, dense orchestrations, and a penchant for rhythmic crescendos reminiscent of gospel and soul. After several noteworthy singles on the UK independent circuit, the band released the album “Lungs” in 2009, which carried Florence And The Machine from club stages to international festivals. The group followed with 2011’s “Ceremonials,” whose arrangements leaned more heavily on choral vocals and atmospheric textures, then 2015’s “How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful,” where the compositions opened further toward rock with more direct songwriting. With 2018’s “High as Hope,” Florence And The Machine adopted a more stripped-back, introspective approach, before returning in 2022 with “Dance Fever,” which reintroduced pop-leaning structures and a pronounced rhythmic focus, while preserving an aesthetic that blends emotional intensity, expansive instrumentation, and indie influences.
