Mallrat

Born in Brisbane, Queensland, Grace Shaw developed the Mallrat project in her teens and released her first tracks in the mid-2010s, initially blending light hip-hop, indie pop and electronic textures. Mallrat released the EP Uninvited in 2016 and refined her songwriting on In the Sky (2018) and Driving Music (2019), putting out short, melodic and tightly crafted songs carried by a supple voice that moves naturally between singing and spoken phrasing. This intimate yet rhythmic aesthetic sits within an Australian pop scene receptive to links between rap, electronica and songwriting. Over the years Mallrat has shared tracks with Allday, Basenji, BENEE and Azealia Banks, and has appeared on stage alongside artists such as Peking Duk, Maggie Rogers, Kylie Minogue and MARINA. Her debut album Butterfly Blue was released in 2022 and continued this sensitive, synthetic approach, followed by a second record, Light hit my face like a straight right, released in 2025, in which Mallrat further broadened her palette toward atmospheric pop, clear hooks and fuller production.
