Jack Johnson

Born in 1975 on the North Shore of the island of Oʻahu in Hawaii, Jack Johnson grew up amid surf culture and acoustic guitars, and began recording his first songs early on while pursuing a professional surfing career, until an injury steered him toward film and music. After settling in California, he made surf films such as 'Thicker Than Water' (2000) and 'The September Sessions' (2002), whose soundtracks served as a springboard for his folk songwriting. His debut album, 'Brushfire Fairytales', arrived in 2001, followed by 'On and On' (2003) and 'In Between Dreams' (2005), which established an aesthetic blending acoustic folk, soft rock, and light pop, carried by a laid‑back voice, stripped‑down guitar work, and moderate tempos. Across his releases, from 'Sleep Through the Static' (2008) to 'Meet the Moonlight' (2022), Johnson has maintained an intimate approach focused on songs that seem simple on the surface, addressing everyday life, relationships, and environmental concerns. As the founder of the Brushfire Records label and an active member of the Kokua Hawaii Foundation, he has also developed a parallel role as a producer and event organizer around the Hawaiian and Californian folk and surf scenes.
