Ray LaMontagne

Born in Nashua, New Hampshire, in 1973, Ray LaMontagne stands in the tradition of American folk singer-songwriters, blending intimate folk rock, Americana, and touches of soul. After spending his youth in New England and working in a factory in Maine, LaMontagne turned to songwriting in the mid-1990s, before drawing notice with his debut album, Trouble (2004), marked by acoustic guitars, a rough-hewn voice, and slow, melodic compositions. His career continued with Till the Sun Turns Black (2006) and Gossip in the Grain (2008), which broadened the palette toward more orchestrated arrangements while keeping LaMontagne’s voice at the center and lyrics focused on relationships, doubt, and inner landscapes. In 2010, he recorded God Willin’ & the Creek Don’t Rise with his band The Pariah Dogs, an album with rootsier sonics that earned him a Grammy in the contemporary folk category. LaMontagne then explored more psychedelic, retro directions with Supernova (2014), followed by atmospheric folk rock on Ouroboros (2016), before returning to a more stripped-back approach on Part of the Light (2018) and Monovision (2020). On stage, he alternates between solo acoustic sets and full electric lineups, operating at the crossroads of folk circuits, indie rock, and the songwriter scene in North America and Europe.
