Corinne Bailey Rae

Born in Leeds in 1979 to a British-Caribbean family, Corinne Bailey Rae first trained as a singer in church choirs before taking up guitar and joining the local rock scene with the band Helen in the late 1990s. She then moved toward a more soul- and R&B-oriented songwriting style, informed by pop and light jazz, and emerged in the mid-2000s with the international success of her debut album “Corinne Bailey Rae” (2006). Her soft, intimate voice paired with sparse arrangements focused on guitar and the rhythm section characterizes that early period. With “The Sea” (2010) she adopted a darker, more introspective tone, blending soul, folk and rock with lyrics shaped by grief and rebuilding, before returning to a brighter, more hybrid production on “The Heart Speaks in Whispers” (2016), which incorporates touches of groove, subtle psychedelia and electronic textures. Corinne Bailey Rae has also pursued numerous guest collaborations, notably in jazz, including a prominent contribution to Herbie Hancock’s album “River: The Joni Letters” (2007). In 2023, “Black Rainbows” opened a new, more experimental phase driven by rock, gospel and abstract soul sounds, inspired by archives and works of the African diaspora, confirming her ongoing evolution between intimate songwriting and sonic exploration.
