Mumford & Sons
Formed in London in 2007, Mumford & Sons brought together Marcus Mumford, Ben Lovett, Ted Dwane and, until 2021, Winston Marshall, emerging from the folk-rock scene of the city’s small clubs and bars. The band initially belonged to the London folk revival, defined by an acoustic sound centered on guitar, banjo, double bass, dry percussion and vocal harmonies, which shaped the songs on their debut album Sigh No More (2009). With Babel (2012), Mumford & Sons extended this songwriting approach—built on gradual rises in intensity—while expanding the role of collective arrangements on stage during tours across Europe and North America and at major festivals. Wilder Mind (2015) represents an aesthetic break: the band largely abandoned the banjo and folk textures in favor of a more electric rock register and a more direct rhythmic drive. The 2016 EP Johannesburg, made with Baaba Maal, The Very Best and Beatenberg, opened a collaborative chapter oriented toward African influences. With Delta (2018), Mumford & Sons moved toward a more atmospheric approach, while retaining Marcus Mumford’s prominent vocals, accessible melodic structures and broader arrangements, straddling folk, rock and touches of pop.
