Red Hot Chili Peppers

Formed in Los Angeles in 1982 around Anthony Kiedis and bassist Flea, Red Hot Chili Peppers early on developed a hybrid rock sound rooted in funk, punk and rap, quickly becoming a recognizable presence on California’s club scene. The group, originally completed by guitarist Hillel Slovak and drummer Jack Irons, released a self-titled debut in 1984, followed by Freaky Styley (1985) and The Uplift Mofo Party Plan (1987), which gradually established the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ aesthetic of syncopated riffs, prominent bass lines and near-punk energy. After Slovak’s death, the arrivals of John Frusciante and drummer Chad Smith led to Mother’s Milk (1989) and the pivotal Blood Sugar Sex Magik (1991), where the band’s sound opened up to more melodic compositions. One Hot Minute (1995), Californication (1999), By the Way (2002) and Stadium Arcadium (2006) continued that evolution, blending alternative rock with psychedelic touches and ballads. Despite several guitarist changes, notably between Frusciante and Josh Klinghoffer, Red Hot Chili Peppers maintained the core Kiedis–Flea–Smith and continued their discography with I’m With You (2011), The Getaway (2016) and the twin albums Unlimited Love and Return of the Dream Canteen in 2022, while remaining active on major international stages.
