Faithless

Formed in London in 1995 around singer and MC Maxi Jazz, producer and keyboardist Sister Bliss, and artistic director Rollo Armstrong, Faithless emerged within the British electronic wave by blending house, trip hop, trance and spoken word. From the album Reverence (1996) and then Sunday 8PM (1998), Faithless developed an aesthetic where long club build-ups, repetitive basslines and atmospheric textures intersect with lyrics of spiritual, social or political scope. Outrospective (2001) and No Roots (2004) extended this mix of club-ready formats and more introspective songs, often carried by Maxi Jazz’s measured voice and occasionally by guest vocalists such as Dido, Rollo’s sister. With To All New Arrivals (2006) and The Dance (2010), Faithless also asserted a more melodic, vocal side aimed at the stage, the band presenting itself in an expanded lineup combining electronic live performance and acoustic instrumentation. After a hiatus, the project returned with the remix and reinterpretation album Faithless 2.0 (2015), followed by All Blessed (2020), centered on the duo Rollo / Sister Bliss surrounded by guest singers and poets. The death of Maxi Jazz in 2022 redefined Faithless’s history, whose identity remains tied to the interplay between London club culture, downtempo influences and spoken-word songwriting.
