Big Wreck
Formed in the mid-1990s in Boston around Canadian singer-guitarist Ian Thornley, Big Wreck brought together Canadian-American musicians drawn to a powerful sound blending hard rock, alternative rock, progressive inflections, and bluesy touches. The band rose to prominence at the end of the decade with the album In Loving Memory Of... in 1997, followed by The Pleasure and the Greed in 2001, noted for long compositions, intricate guitar work, and a penchant for dynamic shifts. After splitting up in 2002, Ian Thornley pursued a project under his own name before Big Wreck was reborn in 2010 with a new lineup centered on his voice and guitar playing. This second phase yielded Albatross in 2012, Ghosts in 2014, and Grace Street in 2017, extending Big Wreck’s aesthetic toward more textured rock that integrates atmospheric elements while retaining a hefty, melodic core. Rooted primarily in the Canadian rock scene, the band has remained active on North American touring circuits and continued its discography with ...But For the Sun in 2019, followed by a series of numbered EPs (7.1 in 2021, 7.2 in 2022, 7.3 in 2023), in which Big Wreck further refines its blend of heavy riffs, elaborate structures, and melodies carried by Thornley’s voice.
