Sloan
Formed in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in the early 1990s, Sloan brings together Chris Murphy, Jay Ferguson, Patrick Pentland, and Andrew Scott around an indie-rock sound steeped in power pop. The band emerged amid the so-called Halifax Pop Explosion before relocating to Toronto and establishing a lasting presence in the Canadian music landscape. Early releases, including the album Smeared (1992) following an initial EP, set out a sound built on melodic guitars, a taste for immediate choruses, and textures akin to the alternative rock of the era. With Twice Removed (1994), then One Chord to Another (1996) and Navy Blues (1998), Sloan refined a songwriting approach in which each member composes and sings, moving the material between radiant pop, sturdier rock, and mid-tempo songs while maintaining overall cohesion. Later records—among them Never Hear the End of It (2006), Commonwealth (2014), 12 (2018), and Steady (2022)—carry this multi-voiced formula forward and sustain a catalog where concise tracks, longer suites, and discreet nods to 1960s and 1970s rock sit side by side. Active on Canadian and North American stages, Sloan continues to champion in concert a repertoire centered on balancing vocal harmonies, rock energy, and collective songwriting.
