54-40

Based in the Vancouver area of British Columbia, 54‑40 formed in 1980 around singer/guitarist Neil Osborne and bassist Brad Merritt, with various guitarists and drummers joining over the decades. The name 54‑40 refers to the North American political slogan '54‑40 or Fight', evoking a once‑disputed border and immediately placing the band within a North American imaginary. Emerging from the local independent scene, 54‑40 released their first album, 'Set the Fire', in 1984 before moving to a major label with '54·40' (1986) and 'Show Me' (1987), which firmly established them on the Canadian rock scene. Initially strongly influenced by post‑punk and new wave, 54‑40's sound gradually shifted toward a more melodic alternative rock—close to college rock and sometimes tinged with folk and roots rock—built around clear guitars and direct choruses. Records such as 'Dear Dear' (1992), 'Smilin' Buddha Cabaret' (1994) and 'Casual Viewin'' (2000) accompanied this evolution and sustained the band's regular touring presence, especially in Canadian venues and festivals. With the arrival of guitarist/keyboardist Dave Genn in the mid‑2000s, 54‑40 consolidated a stable lineup that continues to record new albums and explore contemporary rock while remaining true to melody‑centred songwriting and an introspective tone.
