Big Sugar
Originating in Toronto in the late 1980s, the Big Sugar project centers on guitarist and singer Gordie Johnson, who forged a sound blending heavy blues rock, hard rock, reggae, and psychedelic touches. Cutting its teeth on the Canadian club circuit before moving up to larger venues, Big Sugar gradually honed a repertoire defined by guitar-driven riffs, assertive bass lines, and a marked taste for reggae- and dub-inspired rhythms. The self-titled debut studio album appeared in 1991, followed by Five Hundred Pounds in 1993 and Hemi-Vision in 1996, which cemented the band’s place in the Canadian rock landscape of the late 1990s. With Heated in 1998 and Brothers and Sisters, Are You Ready? in 2001, Big Sugar continued to probe the crossroads of electric blues, muscular rock, and Caribbean influences, buoyed in particular by Jamaican bassist Garry Lowe and multi-instrumentalist Kelly “Mr. Chill” Hoppe. A French-language version of Heated, released as Chauffe à bloc in 1998, underscores Big Sugar’s roots in Canada’s bilingual context and its ongoing connection with Quebec audiences. After a hiatus in the mid-2000s, the group returned on record with Revolution Per Minute in 2011 and then Yardstyle in 2014, where Big Sugar revisits its catalog in a more stripped-down, reggae-forward form. The 2020 album Eternity Now extends this trajectory, confirming the place of Gordie Johnson and Big Sugar within a hybrid aesthetic bridging North American rock, blues traditions, and Jamaican sound culture.
