Cardinals travel to Birmingham to perform Masquerade live on September 1, 2026 at the Hare & Hounds. Born in Cork in a rehearsal space as icy in winter as stifling in summer, the quintet plays precisely on contrasts: light and dark, softness and tension, bursts of hope and more disillusioned moments.
The band grew up amid family ties and high school friends: the brothers Euan (vocals, guitar) and Finn Manning (accordion), their cousin Darragh (drums, tambourine, glockenspiel), joined by Oskar Gudinovic (guitar) and Aaron Hurley (bass). From a post-punk base, Cardinals broadens the frame toward a melancholic indie rock where the accordion becomes a signature, straddling shoegaze, Irish folk, and moodier gothic touches.
Designed as an album with an A-side and a B-side, Masquerade embraces a real tonal shift, nourished by influences that rub against one another: Townes Van Zandt-style folk melodies, industrial edges in the manner of Nine Inch Nails, the energy of Iceage, shadows of Type O Negative, and a hip-hop sensibility in the background.
