Jess Williamson
Born in the Dallas suburbs and initially active in Austin during her studies at the University of Texas, Jess Williamson has since the early 2010s developed a writing style that sits between folk, indie rock and alternative country, with a marked preference for airy arrangements and introspective atmospheres. After the Medicine Wheel/Death Songs EP in 2011, Jess Williamson released Native State independently in 2014 and then Heart Song in 2016, two records that established a stripped-back form, centered on the voice and slow songs, often carried by the guitar. Her move to Los Angeles accompanied a broader sonic evolution on Cosmic Wink in 2018, released on Mexican Summer, where her folk opens more to psychedelic pop and a shaded country rock. Jess Williamson continues in that direction with Sorceress in 2020, then in parallel with Plains, a duo formed with Katie Crutchfield of Waxahatchee, whose album I Walked with You a Ways appeared in 2022. Her fifth solo album, Time Ain’t Accidental, released in 2023, extends this approach between modern Americana, soft rock and intimate songwriting. On stage as in the studio, Jess Williamson inhabits an American indie landscape where folk traditions intersect with more contemporary forms.
